A magnitude 4.8 earthquake has shaken parts of Victoria in the early hours of Saturday morning, with the tremor felt across Melbourne and throughout Wyndham.

The earthquake struck shortly after 2am on Saturday, 3 October, with its epicentre reported near Leongatha in South Gippsland, southeast of Melbourne.

Residents across metropolitan Melbourne reported feeling their homes shake, with windows and doors rattling and some people woken by the movement.

Within minutes, Wyndham residents began sharing their experiences on the Wyndham TV Facebook page.

“I thought someone was trying to break into the house!! My dogs were fast asleep… and my entire house shook!!” Judith Aye wrote.

Noah Dawson described a frightening experience: “I thought the whole world was exploding. My goodness, I’ve never been more scared in my life.”

For Maggie Bil, the unexpected shaking prompted a change of plans.

“I was just about to go upstairs to bed when I heard my house shake a bit upstairs, so I went nope, I’ll have a coffee instead now,” she wrote.

Reports of the earthquake came from across a broad area of metropolitan Melbourne, with residents describing shaking, rattling windows and movement inside their homes.

At this stage, there are no confirmed reports of significant damage or injuries.

Earthquake magnitudes and locations can be revised as further seismic data is analysed.
