In short:

The Victorian Opposition has pledged to cap weekly toll costs at $50 for eligible motorists and small businesses if elected in November. The two-year scheme would begin on 1 July 2027, with costs above the cap claimed through quarterly rebates.

Lighter Vehicle Operators Would Benefit

Victorian motorists could have their weekly toll costs capped at $50 under a new policy proposed by the state Opposition ahead of the November election.

The Liberals and Nationals have pledged to introduce the cap for two years from 1 July 2027 if elected, covering cars, light commercial vehicles and eligible small business fleets of up to five vehicles.

Under the proposal, motorists who spend more than $50 on tolls in a week would be able to claim the additional amount back through a quarterly rebate administered by Service Victoria.

The Opposition says more than 100,000 Victorian families and small businesses would benefit from the scheme.

The policy could provide particular relief for tradies and other motorists who regularly use toll roads, including those driving light commercial vehicles which can attract higher toll charges.

Cap Proposed For Two Years

Rather than reducing toll prices at the point of use, motorists would continue paying the applicable toll before claiming eligible costs above the weekly cap.

The proposal is based on a toll relief model currently operating in New South Wales.

The $50 weekly cap would operate for two years and form the first stage of a broader review of Victoria’s tolling arrangements.

That review would examine how the state’s tolling system operates and whether changes could reduce costs for motorists.

It would also consider the administration of toll notices and associated charges, including the current requirement for toll notices to be sent by post.

The policy would take effect from 1 July 2027 if the Liberals and Nationals form government at the November 2026 Victorian election.
