The Convenience Chain Reduces ATM Presence as Australia Moves Away from Cash Transactions

Cash could soon become a relic of the past, with businesses throughout Australia hastening the transition and prompting mixed reactions among customers. The latest entrant into this cashless trend is 7-Eleven, a convenience chain boasting 762 stores nationwide. In response to the changing payment landscape, 7-Eleven is deliberately reducing the number of ATMs available in its stores, signaling a shift in consumer preferences towards card payments.

Acknowledging this adjustment, a spokesperson for 7-Eleven stated, “We are reducing our ATM footprint to respond to changing customer needs, although some stores will continue to provide ATM facilities.” Customers have already observed the dwindling availability of ATMs within the stores, emphasizing the company’s commitment to accommodating evolving customer demands by making room for new and high-demand services.

The move by 7-Eleven further propels Australia towards a cashless society, echoing a broader trend where banks discourage cash withdrawals and shut down ATM branches. Supermarket giants are now grappling with reduced withdrawal limits, a consequence of Australians seeking alternative avenues for their cash requirements.

Woolworths, a major player in the supermarket industry, took steps in this direction by lowering its cash withdrawal limit from $500 to $200 in September. Additionally, in October, the company implemented a policy requiring customers to make a purchase to facilitate a cash withdrawal. A spokesperson for Woolworths justified these measures, citing the declining use of cash in transactions and the increasing preference for card-only payments among customers.

The transition away from cash in major banks has left supermarket giants bearing the burden of fulfilling Australia’s remaining demand for hard currency. This shift has sparked discontent among some customers who, facing bank branch closures, ATM removals, or non-bank ATM fees, relied on supermarkets like Woolworths for their cash needs.

As the nation hurtles towards a cashless future, the impact on businesses and consumer behavior, including that of Wyndham residents, remains a topic of interest and debate.
