Major works begin on Ison Road Extension.
Construction has begun on the Ison Road Extension in Werribee, a key infrastructure project designed to provide a crucial new link to the Princes Freeway.
The 1.3-kilometre, four-lane extension will connect with the Ison Road Overpass and Geelong Road at the Werribee Main Road–Princes Freeway interchange, enhancing transport links for local residents and businesses.
Major Road Projects Victoria Program Director Tim Price said the project will deliver significant benefits to the community.
“We’re excited to start major works on the Ison Road Extension, which together with the overpass will help provide a crucial new link to the Princes Freeway,” Mr Price said.
“This project will deliver real benefits by improving safety and creating better connections for local residents and businesses.”
Wyndham City Council Mayor Mia Shaw highlighted the project’s role in supporting the region’s rapid growth.
“The Ison Road Extension will be a vital investment in Wyndham’s future to improve connections for our rapidly growing community and help ease congestion in central Werribee,” Cr Shaw said.
“We’re proud to partner with the Victorian Government to deliver this much-needed transport link, which will provide better access to jobs, schools, and essential services while supporting our city’s continued growth.
Once completed, the extension and overpass will support over 29,000 daily journeys by 2036, catering to the increasing demand for improved transport infrastructure. The project will also include dedicated walking and cycling paths to boost active transport options in the area.
The $80 million extension is jointly funded by the Victorian Government and Wyndham City Council, with $60 million provided through the state’s Growth Area Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) fund.
To further improve connectivity, the Victorian and Commonwealth governments have also announced joint funding for the Werribee Main Road–Princes Freeway Interchange Upgrade. This upgrade will add a new Geelong-bound exit ramp, a city-bound entry ramp, and additional lanes, with traffic lights at key intersections. The improvements are expected to cut peak travel times by over 10 minutes and reduce congestion for the 10,000 motorists who use the interchange daily.
Planning for the interchange upgrade is ongoing, with construction timelines to be confirmed as planning progresses. The Ison Road Extension is expected to be open to traffic by the end of 2026.
