Seven Months After Its Grand Opening, Altona’s $11.9 Million Pier Faces Necessary Maintenance Work, Ensuring Its Longevity and Safety
The newly constructed Altona Pier, a stunning $11.9 million development that opened seven months ago, is scheduled for essential maintenance work. This modern pier, funded by the Victorian Government, boasts state-of-the-art facilities, beautiful timber decking, improved accessibility, and breathtaking bay views, making it a beloved landmark for locals and visitors alike.
The maintenance work is set to begin between 22 July and 31 July 2024, subject to weather conditions, and is expected to take up to three weeks, with completion projected for mid-August 2024. These standard procedures are necessary to ensure the durability and safety of the materials used in the pier’s construction, allowing them to settle and adapt to the environmental conditions.

During this period, the pier will be closed to the public from Monday to Friday. To minimise inconvenience, the pier will reopen on weekends when no work is being conducted, allowing residents and visitors to continue enjoying this popular spot during their leisure time.
The redevelopment project of the pier, which began with community input, aimed to enhance safety, and accessibility, and provide a modern recreational space. The pier’s design includes a 310-meter length with a branched pier head, offering improved fishing opportunities and multiple vantage points for enjoying bay views. It features a sturdy concrete substructure, a new hardwood timber deck, handrails, lighting, seating, and an accessible low landing for all abilities.
