Digital Composite Released in Truganina Arson Investigation
Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad have released a digital composite image of a man in connection with a fatal house fire in Truganina in January. The image was compiled using enhanced CCTV footage. The man is described as Middle Eastern, aged between 25-30 years old, and of a slim build.

Today, investigators are holding an information caravan on Dover Street, where the tragic incident occurred, hoping to gather information about those involved. The information caravan is being held on a Thursday, the same day as the fatal fire, in the hope of capturing the same individuals who may have been going about their daily routines on that day.
Investigators have received several anonymous reports to Crime Stoppers, including one call where a pseudonym or nickname was given. They are urging this particular caller to make further contact and provide additional information.

Working closely with Taskforce Lunar, investigators have confirmed the belief that the arson attack was likely linked to an illicit tobacco dispute. Information suggests it was a targeted attack, but at the wrong address. Investigators maintain that the victim, Katie Tangey, was completely innocent and had no involvement in the illicit tobacco trade.
Shortly after 2am on Thursday, 16 January, CCTV footage captured two individuals exiting a dark coloured vehicle, similar to a BMW X3 or X5, parked outside the address. A significant explosion then occurred, and the pair left the scene. The 27-year-old victim, who was inside the property, called emergency services to report the fire.
Emergency services initially responded to reports of a fire at a residential property on Dover Street around 2.30am on Thursday, 16 January. Tangey was housesitting the property, which belongs to a family member, at the time. Tangey and the family’s golden retriever both perished in the fire, and the three-storey townhouse was completely destroyed.

Over the past seven weeks, a significant investigation has been launched to determine the motivation for the attack and identify those responsible. Anyone with information or who recognises the man in the composite image or the vehicle involved is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

Detective Inspector Chris Murray from the Arson & Explosives Squad appealed to the public, stating, “If you recognise the man in the facefit, have any knowledge of those involved or the location of the car – a dark coloured BMW X3 or X5 – I cannot implore you enough to find it in yourself to do the right thing and come forward.” He added, “This is one of the most tragic incidents I have seen in my 38 years of policing. Katie Tangey was 27, she had her whole life ahead of her… It is an unimaginable horror I hope nobody else has to experience.”
