New Gateway Targets Online Shopping
Avalon Airport Melbourne has locked in another major global freight partnership set to boost Asian trade and create dozens of jobs.
On 12 August, Avalon and Teleport, an AirAsia-affiliated e-commerce logistics specialist, announced a strategic partnership that will see Avalon become a hub for imported goods.
The Kuala Lumpur-based company currently moves cargo into primary Australian airports from Asian origin markets including mainland China and Hong Kong SAR, India, Malaysia and Vietnam.
Chinese e-commerce giants Temu and Shein are expected to be among the biggest players capitalising on the new gateway.
In 2025, Australians spent nearly AUD 19 billion on online platforms, growing 13 per cent year on year.
Avalon CEO Ari Suss said the move was a win for both parties.
Year Of Major Moves Continues
“Avalon’s ambition is clear: to become Australia’s preferred gateway for e-commerce, providing the speed, capacity and curfew-free operations needed to connect Australian consumers with the world,” Mr Suss said.
“This partnership is a clear win-win: Teleport brings strong eCommerce volume and regional network reach, whilst Avalon Airport provides the dedicated infrastructure needed as a stronger freight gateway for Victoria.”
Pete Chareonwongsak, Chief Executive Officer of Teleport, said Avalon Airport offered the right fit for Teleport’s growth plans.
“Our proven history of scaling throughput across primary hubs like Kuala Lumpur, and secondary hubs like Don Mueang, Phuket in Thailand, and Bali in Indonesia, gives us full confidence in the massive potential this partnership will deliver for the region.”
This marks the latest move in a year of rapid commerce expansion at Avalon that included the establishment of Australia and Saudi Arabia’s first direct trade route and the signing of an MoU with Emirates Group-owned cargo and logistics company dnata in July.
In the past year, Avalon has also rebranded, opened an international freight facility capable of processing up to 100,000 tonnes of cargo annually and welcomed the return of Jetstar international services.
