Battle for School Safety Intensifies: Wyndham City Partners with Highway Patrol and Council Enforcement Team in Controversial Move
In a collaborative effort aimed at ensuring the safety of children outside the school premises, Wyndham City once again joined forces with the Highway Patrol and the local council enforcement team this week at Alamanda College in Point Cook. This initiative is part of the ongoing campaign to “Keep Kids Safe Outside the School Gate.”
The presence of these authorities at Alamanda College served as a poignant reminder that safety on the roads is a shared responsibility, extending to all road users, including cyclists, particularly during peak times when school-related activities are in full swing.
As part of this safety reminder, road users were urged to adhere to important road rules:
1. Drive at Reduced Speed Zones: Motorists were reminded to exercise caution and reduce their speed between the hours of 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the vicinity of schools. This is crucial to enhance the safety of children arriving or departing from school.
2. Park Legally: Illegally parked vehicles, such as double parking, stopping in no-standing zones, or parking on nature strips, were highlighted as hazards that need to be avoided. Proper parking not only maintains traffic flow but also contributes to the safety of students.
3. Respect School Crossing Supervisors: The role of School Crossing Supervisors was emphasized as integral to the safety of students. These dedicated individuals play a crucial role in facilitating safe crossings for children, and their instructions should be followed diligently by all road users.
Community Concerns Have Arisen Over School Zoning
However, it should be noted that concerns have arisen within the community regarding the reasons surrounding the lack of adherence to these safety measures, particularly at Alamanda College.
One issue highlighted was the influx of students from various directions, regardless of their residence falling within the school’s designated zone. Concerns were also raised regarding the school’s verification of addresses using the Australian Election Commission or the requirement for legal affidavits from parents to ensure compliance with zone rules.
One resident voiced their frustration, questioning the school’s commitment to strictly following the designated school zone rules. Alamanda College, with a student population exceeding 3500, holds the distinction of being the largest government school in Victoria.
The concerns raised included the lack of future capacity expansion, as multi-story buildings are yet to be constructed. Moreover, the conversion of parking lots into classrooms has further strained the school’s resources. Alamanda College stands as the sole school in the western region to receive a substantial $6 million fund for expansion, while others do not receive similar capacity expansion funding.
Critics argued that individuals were exploiting enrollment policy loopholes to continue overloading the school. This excess student population has led to increased pressure on teachers, diminished focus on student well-being, irregular meal schedules, and exacerbated traffic congestion, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
As discussions surrounding the safety and management of schools near residential areas continue, the importance of adhering to road safety rules remains a paramount concern for authorities, parents, and the community alike. The campaign to “Keep Kids Safe Outside the School Gate” strives to reinforce the significance of these rules and promote the safety and well-being of all students.
