Billions For SRL, Not The West

Albo SRL

In short:

Driverless trains are planned for Melbourne’s Suburban Rail Loop, but Wyndham Vale and Melton lines remain diesel with no electrification timeline. Pressure is mounting as billions flow elsewhere while demand in the west surges.

Billions to Flow From Federal Budget

The Albanese Labor Government is preparing to commit several billion dollars to the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL), backing a project designed to connect Melbourne’s outer suburbs without routing commuters through the CBD.

The SRL is the flagship transport project of the Allan Labor Government and includes four stages, with SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill expected to open in 2035.

Future stages extend north to Melbourne Airport and west from Werribee to Sunshine via the proposed Sunshine Superhub.

Wyndham Vale and Tarneit stations are now among the busiest in Victoria outside Southern Cross, yet the line remains a diesel-run V/Line service rather than an electrified metropolitan line.

While West Lags Decades Behind

Electrification has been promised for years but has not progressed. Peak services are overcrowded, car parks fill early, and surrounding streets are routinely used as overflow.

It means while a driverless train will run from Cheltenham to Box Hill, Wyndham Vale and Melton will not even be electrified and will continue operating on diesel V/Line services.

While SRL East is under construction, the sections that would service Melbourne’s west are not expected until the second half of the century.

The Liberal Party remains opposed to the project, arguing funding should be redirected to immediate transport upgrades.

The West Party has also pushed for greater focus on infrastructure in Melbourne’s west.

Growth Only Increasing

Melbourne’s long-delayed Airport Rail Link continues to face planning and funding hurdles, adding to broader concerns about delivery timelines for major infrastructure.

Population growth is accelerating pressure on the west. Wyndham is projected to reach 500,000 residents by 2040, increasing demand on already stretched transport corridors.

New infrastructure is planned, including the West Tarneit Station expected to open in 2026 and early planning for a Truganina Station.

Other proposed stations, including Sayers Road and Black Forest Road, remain delayed.

Capacity upgrades have been announced for the Wyndham Vale line, but there has been no commitment to electrification or expanded parking at key stations.

The SRL is positioned as a long-term solution for a growing city, but for commuters in Melbourne’s west, core upgrades to existing lines remain unresolved.
