In short:

The Point Cook Road bridge over the Princes Freeway is set to close from July to September, with three months of major disruption expected for Wyndham commuters. Three months of disruption

Point Cook commuters are facing three months of traffic chaos, with the Point Cook Road bridge over the Princes Freeway set to close from July to September.

Big Build Victoria has confirmed the closure dates as part of the ongoing Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade. The bridge will be shut while crews complete major works to create space for a new outbound freeway exit ramp servicing Seabrook and Point Cook.

The intersection currently handles around 28,000 vehicles a day and is one of the main routes in and out of Point Cook, with the corridor already dealing with significant congestion at peak times.

The wider project is replacing the existing roundabout with a traffic light–controlled intersection, building the new outbound exit ramp from the Princes Freeway, and adding lanes on both Point Cook Road and Central Avenue. Australian-owned BMD Constructions has been awarded the construction contract, with completion targeted for mid-2027.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams said the upgrade was a response to community feedback. “Locals have told us they want safer, more reliable roads – and that’s exactly what this upgrade will deliver,” she said.

“With new traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and extra lanes, we’re improving traffic flow and making this intersection safer for everyone who uses it.”

Member for Point Cook Matthew Hilakari said the works would deliver long-term benefits for commuters and active transport users. “The Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade will help get locals home sooner and safer, including members of the community who choose to walk or cycle,” he said.

Drivers using the corridor are also navigating a reduced 40km/h speed limit on Point Cook Road between Triholm Avenue and Carinza Avenue, and on Central Avenue between Bruce Comben Reserve and the entry ramp to the Princes Freeway. Big Build Victoria says the speed reduction is in place to protect workers and road users while construction continues.

The July to September closure follows a string of earlier disruptions on the corridor, including the closure of the Point Cook Road entry ramp to the Princes Freeway from 12 January until early March 2026, and a weekend bridge closure from 27 February to 2 March 2026 to prepare the embankment for the new outbound exit ramp.

Once complete, some local road and property access will be permanently changed to left-in/left-out only, including at Fitzpatrick Drive and Lunn Court, and for select properties on Point Cook Road.

Concerns about long-term traffic outcomes have been raised previously, with some residents questioning whether the upgrade will follow the path of the Hoppers Crossing overpass and continue to push congestion further down the network. Planning is also underway for a separate future upgrade of Point Cook Road between Jamieson Way and Dunnings Road.
