CCTV Boost for Crime-Prone Station
Werribee train station has undergone a major CCTV upgrade aimed at improving safety and visibility across the station and surrounding car park. The new system allows for real-time monitoring and faster responses to emergencies, such as assisting unwell passengers or managing incidents that require police or emergency intervention.
The upgrade follows growing safety concerns, with the Werribee area recording 4,474 offences in the 12 months to March. This includes 435 incidents at train stations, 243 in railway carparks, and 41 on buses or at bus stops. Around 3,700 people use Werribee station on a typical weekday.
Metro’s Chief Operating Officer, Aline Frantzen, says safety is at the core of their operations. “CCTV is a key tool we have to keep the train network running smoothly and safely,” she said. “We work closely with Victoria Police every day to minimise disruptions to passengers in the event of a safety incident, and these new cameras give us even better visibility of what’s happening at Werribee station.”
The system is expected to significantly improve the ability to detect and respond to issues on site. Metro says the upgrade is part of broader efforts to enhance public transport safety across Victoria. “Any form of harassment on the public transport network is completely unacceptable,” a spokesperson added.
Authorities hope the improvements will help restore confidence in public transport across the western suburbs, especially in high-crime areas like Werribee.
