A Landmark Showcase of First Nations Artistry and Culture

Wyndham Art Gallery is thrilled to announce the opening of two exciting exhibitions, IWARA and Enduring, which pay homage to the invaluable role played by First Nations artists in both the gallery and community.

From Thursday, June 8 to Sunday, July 30, these exceptional exhibitions will take centre stage during NAIDOC week, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the vibrant and diverse world of Indigenous art.

Marcel Mahfoud, the holder of Wyndham City’s Creative City portfolio, expressed his enthusiasm, urging everyone to visit the Wyndham Art Gallery and witness the powerful and distinctive exhibitions that spotlight preeminent First Nations artists.

The occasion marks the first time that the significant collection of First Nations artwork will be consolidated and presented for public viewing.

Upstairs, the solo exhibition IWARA showcases the awe-inspiring creations of Robert Fielding, a contemporary artist with a heritage spanning Yankunytjatjara, Western Arrente, Pakistani, and Afghan backgrounds.

Through his work, Fielding skillfully weaves contemporary art with ancient ways of existence, providing a glimpse into his world and the rich culture of his community.

This collection features remarkable works that revolve around themes of history, place, and identity. Renowned artists Tony Albert, Maree Clarke, Michael Cook, Peter Waples-Crowe, Karen Casey, and Aunty Marlene Gilson proudly present their works, many of which are being showcased to the community for the very first time.

Mahfoud emphasized the essential role played by Wyndham Art Gallery in storytelling and celebrating diverse perspectives, fostering the creation of an inclusive and vibrant community.

These collaborative exhibitions not only enrich the cultural fabric of Wyndham but also make it a more vibrant and livable place.

Both IWARA and Enduring exhibitions will be open until July 30, offering ample time for visitors to witness the beauty and significance of First Nations art.

Visit the Wyndham Art Gallery and embark on an immersive journey through the mesmerizing realms of IWARA and Enduring.

Additionally, as part of NAIDOC week, the gallery will present a free screening of “You Can Go Now,” a moving and thought-provoking feature documentary on Sunday, July 2, at 2pm.
