CFA Steps Up Property Visits

CFA property checks

In short:

CFA is expanding doorstep fire safety visits across Wyndham, focusing on grassfire-prone areas such as Little River, Wyndham Vale and Manor Lakes. The personalised service helps residents understand local risk, reduce hazards and prepare for summer fire conditions.

Fire Safety Door Knocks

As summer fire risk rises across Wyndham’s outer suburbs, CFA crews are taking bushfire safety advice directly to residents’ homes through tailored property visits designed to lift preparedness and awareness.

The Property Advice Visit Service, known as PAVS, is being used to reach households in areas such as Little River, Wyndham Vale and Manor Lakes, where vast grasslands, fast-moving grassfire risk and rapid growth can leave residents unsure how exposed their properties really are.

Rather than relying on public sessions or online information, CFA members walk around properties with residents, talking through local risks and practical steps to reduce them.

This includes improving access for emergency vehicles, managing vegetation, considering safer planting and understanding how a property may behave during a fire.

Visits can be requested by residents or initiated by CFA members targeting higher-risk properties.

The service is promoted through local events, letterbox drops, community networks, social media, newsletters and new resident kits, helping reach people who might otherwise miss traditional fire preparedness campaigns.

The visits are designed to be practical and conversational, not technical. CFA members use a standard property assessment to guide discussion, focusing on helping residents understand their own risk and make informed decisions that suit their household.

This approach is particularly relevant in Wyndham, which has a large and diverse CALD population and many newer residents unfamiliar with local fire conditions.

For residents, the benefit is personalised advice delivered at home, removing barriers such as time constraints, mobility challenges or lack of awareness.

For CFA, the visits also strengthen local knowledge, helping brigades better understand property access, water points, landscape risk and residents who may need additional support during an emergency.

CFA is now strengthening how PAVS is evaluated to better understand what is working, where improvements are needed and how the program contributes to community safety.

Project teams have been visiting areas where PAVS is active, observing visits and gathering feedback from brigade members delivering the service on the ground.

The aim is to ensure the program continues to evolve alongside fast-growing communities like Wyndham, supporting safer properties, better planning and stronger connections between residents and local CFA crews.
