Carjacking Charges Laid
A man has been charged after an alleged carjacking and dramatic crash in Seabrook that left a vehicle split in two.
Transit Crime Investigation Unit detectives say the man was arrested at a Hoppers Crossing shopping centre after officers on patrol spotted him as part of Operation Pulse.
Police located and arrested the man at a centre on the corner of Derrimut and Heaths roads about 2.30pm on 11 March.
The arrest follows an alleged carjacking in the early hours of 3 March.
Emergency services were called to Point Cook Road about 1am after reports a car had crashed into a tree and split into two.
Police allege the vehicle had been stolen from Laverton Railway Station minutes earlier before the driver sped through a roundabout, struck a gutter and crashed into a tree.
The 2011 Toyota Kluger was destroyed in the crash and the driver allegedly fled the scene.
A 19-year-old man from Lara was arrested and later charged with several offences including carjacking, tampering with a motor vehicle, attempted theft of a motor vehicle and reckless conduct endangering life.
He has also been charged with reckless conduct endangering serious injury, driving at a dangerous speed, careless driving, failing to report an accident to police and driving while disqualified.
The man was scheduled to appear before Wyndham Magistrates’ Court on 12 March.
