Citizen Awards Go To Palestine Cause

Australia Day Palestine

In short:

Wyndham City Council’s Young Citizen of the Year decision is under scrutiny due to the recipient’s links to Wyndham for Palestine, which has called for Australia Day on 26 January to be scrapped. The fact both top awards also went to volunteers from the same organisation has prompted questions about neutrality, integrity and fairness.

Controversy Over Council's Decision

Wyndham City Council is under scrutiny after naming a Wyndham for Palestine advocate as its Young Citizen of the Year, a decision that sits uneasily alongside council’s recent defence of Australia Day celebrations.

The award announcement praises community contribution and leadership, but the decision has drawn attention because Wyndham for Palestine has publicly called for Australia Day on 26 January to be scrapped.

The group argues the date causes harm and should no longer be treated as a unifying national event, instead calling for a future date linked to a treaty process.

Those calls were firmly rejected days ago by Wyndham’s mayor.

Josh Gilligan said Australia Day celebrations would continue in the municipality.

“Australia Day is here to stay in Wyndham and so is our commitment to recognising local heroes who make Wyndham a great place to live, work and raise a family,” the mayor said.

“We are a nation who created Wi-Fi, the cervical cancer vaccine, Vegemite and AC/DC, just to name a few achievements.

“We should be proud to celebrate all we’ve achieved on 26th of January every year.”

The situation has been further complicated by the fact that both the Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year awards were given to volunteers from the same organisation, an outcome that has prompted questions about neutrality, integrity and fairness in the selection process.

In a municipality with hundreds of sporting clubs, emergency services, charities and community groups, residents are questioning how council assesses nominations and whether sufficient safeguards exist to ensure broad and balanced representation.

Council has not publicly detailed its scoring criteria, how nominees are shortlisted, or how it manages perceived conflicts when award recipients are linked to active political or advocacy campaigns.

The Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year awards are promoted as Wyndham’s highest civic honours, placing increased focus on the transparency and credibility of the process behind them.
