In short:
The Point Cook Aviators Baseball and Softball Club has fielded its first ever women’s baseball team, marking a significant milestone for women’s sport in Wyndham. The club says the debut opens a new pathway for female players in Point Cook, with the focus on participation rather than the result on the day.
Women's team takes flight
The Point Cook Aviators Baseball and Softball Club has played its first ever women’s baseball game, in what the club is calling a “huge moment” for the local sporting community.
In a statement following the match, the club said the day marked the start of a new chapter for the Aviators, who are based in the Saltwater estate at Point Cook.
“Today marked a huge moment for the Aviators, with our Women’s team taking the field for their very first game,” the club said.
The Aviators did not publicly disclose the final score, indicating the result was not the focus of the day.
“The result didn’t define the day. What mattered was the start,” the club said. “A new chapter for the club, new opportunities for players, and a pathway we’re proud to be building for the future.”
The match represents the realisation of an ambition the Aviators flagged earlier in the year, when they announced they were working towards a first ever women’s baseball team for the winter season.
The club’s women’s program adds to a growing local sporting scene in Point Cook, which has recently benefited from infrastructure upgrades including the stage two completion of the Jamieson Way Community Centre and Reserve, aimed at meeting demand from the suburb’s expanding population.
The Aviators said the support shown around the diamond — from teammates, other club sides, opposition players and officials — reflected the wider character of local baseball.
“What stood out most wasn’t just what happened on the diamond, but around it,” the club said. “The support from across the club, from other teams, and even from opposition and officials, showed exactly what this baseball community is about.”
The club said the day reflected the inclusive environment it was aiming to build for players new and returning, describing it as “a supportive, welcoming environment where everyone can step in, have a go, and be part of something bigger.”
The Aviators said the women’s program was “only the beginning.”
