Revolutionizing Grocery Delivery: Coles Unveils High-Tech Customer Fulfillment Centre in Truganina
On Friday, September 20, Coles announced the opening of their newest customer fulfilment centre (CFC) in Truganina. The 87,000-square-metre site will utilize advanced technology such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation to fulfill customer orders.
According to Coles, the facility has the capacity to hold an estimated three million units of stock and process up to 10,000 customer orders per day. The company also revealed that the CFC will be equipped with a fleet of over 700 bots, aptly named ‘The Hive’, which can fulfill a customer order of 50 items in just five minutes.

An artificial intelligence ‘air traffic’ control system will oversee the bots as they navigate through 3D grids, transporting containers of grocery items to be packed and delivered by on-site staff.
Coles CEO Leah Weckert expressed excitement over the new technology and its potential to improve the metropolitan delivery process. She stated, “This transition from a local, store-based fulfillment model to a central, world-class facility will enable us to better serve the greater Melbourne region, home to more than five million people.”

The CFC is expected to create over 1000 job opportunities, including roles for drivers and fulfillment staff who will utilize high-tech packing equipment. Additionally, the facility will be supported by a fleet of more than 200 home delivery vans. The Truganina CFC will join Coles’ existing automated distribution centres in Kemps Creek, New South Wales, and Redbank, Queensland.
