Commuters Avoid Far-Off Car Park, Flood Nearby Streets Instead

Calls grow for commuter shuttle

Residents in Wyndham Vale are urging the Victorian Government, V/Line, and the City of Wyndham to introduce a free peak-time shuttle bus service between Wyndham Vale Station and the Hobbs Road Car Park, saying it’s a necessary step to fix growing safety and congestion issues.

Despite the $6 million Hobbs Road Car Park officially opening in March 2023 and adding 380 new spaces under the Car Parks for Commuters Program, surrounding residential streets remain choked with parked cars. Many commuters reportedly avoid the new facility due to its distance from the station and lack of direct access.

Streets such as Cumbrian Road, Mayesbrook Road, and Commuter Boulevard continue to be heavily affected, with narrow roads forcing cars to squeeze through limited space. Emergency access is a serious concern, and the City of Wyndham has already introduced a no-parking zone on one side of Cumbrian Road in an attempt to ease congestion.

Residents argue that’s not enough.

A growing number of locals are now backing a proposal for a shuttle service connecting the station with the Hobbs Road car park. They say such a service would ease street congestion, improve safety, and provide fairer access to public transport—particularly for those with limited mobility.

“Those with temporary afflictions may be unable to walk that distance. I was in that position,” said local resident Doug. “When one can only walk 30 metres before resting for 2 or 3 minutes, it is hard.”

Shuttle bus systems have worked in other commuter areas, with Department of Transport data from 2022 showing increases in public transport usage and reductions in local traffic where similar services have been trialled.

Supporters say a shuttle service at Wyndham Vale would not only be cost-effective but also contribute to environmental goals by reducing short car trips and encouraging public transport use.

A petition has been launched calling on all levels of government and V/Line to urgently consider the proposal.
