Council Backs Data Centre Framework

Wyndham councillors have unanimously backed a push to develop a formal council position on the growing number of data centre developments proposed across the municipality.

At the council meeting on 28 July, councillors agreed to support a notice of motion that will see officers prepare a report examining the current and future growth of data centres in Wyndham and the impacts they may have on the community.

The report, due within six months, will assess potential benefits and challenges associated with data centres, including impacts on infrastructure, transport, energy demand, water use, land use planning, climate and the environment.

It will also review how other councils have responded to similar developments and recommend a formal Wyndham City Council policy.

Importantly, the motion does not change the planning approval process for data centres.

Planning Decisions Come Down To The State

Planning decisions remain the responsibility of the Victorian Government under the state’s planning system, with council’s role varying depending on the proposal.

Instead, the motion focuses on strengthening Wyndham’s advocacy, establishing a clear policy position and improving transparency around major developments.

Councillors also agreed to advocate to the Victorian Government for greater transparency and community consultation on major data centre proposals.

Until a formal council policy is adopted, the motion states that any significant decisions involving Wyndham City Council and major data centre developments should, wherever legally possible, be determined by councillors at a public council meeting rather than under delegated authority.

Officers will also report back on any legislative or governance changes needed to achieve that outcome.
