Crucial Meetings to be Held Online

Wyndham City Council will move its next two meetings entirely online as a leadership crisis continues to dominate the chamber.

Councillors will meet remotely on 27 April to consider a no confidence motion against Mayor Preet Singh, before holding the 2026–27 draft budget meeting online on 28 April.

The shift away from in-person meetings means residents will not be able to attend the public gallery as they typically would for major decisions, including the budget.

The draft budget meeting is widely regarded as one of the most important of the year, with multi-million dollar decisions shaping council spending and priorities.

Cr Singh is expected to chair the budget meeting, despite ongoing pressure for him to step aside.

All other councillors have publicly withdrawn their support, leaving the council effectively split while formal processes continue.

The impasse follows Cr Singh’s refusal to resign over a 2024 character reference he provided for a man who was later convicted of child sex offences, prior to joining council.

Preet Mayor

In a public statement on 23 April, he denied any wrongdoing and accused a “politically motivated group” of driving the campaign against him, while Deputy Mayor Jasmine Hill has been performing mayoral duties during his absence.

The situation has raised broader questions about how the council can operate while its mayor faces a no confidence motion and does not command majority support in the chamber.

Community pressure is continuing to build. A third protest calling for Cr Singh to resign will be held on 26 April at 2pm, as the standoff enters its fourth week.

Two earlier protests drew significant crowds demanding he step down.

The coming days are expected to be pivotal, with the no confidence motion and budget meeting set to test whether the council can function effectively under its current leadership.
