In short:
Eighteen months into the Connecting Wyndham program, Council has outlined completed and ongoing road projects as congestion continues to affect one of Victoria’s fastest-growing areas. Residents are being asked which roads and intersections should be prioritised next.
Council Releases Road Updates
Eighteen months after the Connecting Wyndham program began, Council has released an update outlining which road and transport works have been completed, which remain under construction, and which are still in planning.
The update comes as Wyndham continues to experience sustained pressure on its road network, driven by rapid population growth, high car dependency and expanding suburbs that have outpaced transport infrastructure.
Council says one major road project has been completed during the first 18 months of the program, with three others currently under construction and additional projects yet to commence.
Stage one of the Widen Little River Roads project has been completed, involving reconstruction works on Old Melbourne Road between Little River and Little River Road, and McLeans Road between Old Melbourne Road and Rothwell Road.
The works included sealed lanes, shoulders and drainage upgrades. Council states the project cost $8.5 million.
Construction remains underway at the Tarneit Road and Leakes Road intersection, on K Road, and on the Ison Road project.
Council says all three projects are currently scheduled for completion in 2026, subject to construction timelines.
Council has also confirmed that over the 2025/26 financial year, four roads were reconstructed and another four resurfaced under its annual road programs.
Seventeen shared user paths and footpaths were also built or upgraded through active transport works.
The projects form part of the broader Connecting Wyndham program, which spans major road upgrades, maintenance works, active transport and transport advocacy.
Council describes the program as its largest investment in road infrastructure.
The program has received national recognition, including an Institute of Transportation Engineers award linked to active travel initiatives and a commendation from the National Growth Areas Alliance.
Mayor Josh Gilligan said congestion and safety remained ongoing challenges.
“Reducing traffic congestion and improving road safety is a key focus for Council, and over the past 18 months we’ve completed some projects and planned further works,” Cr Gilligan said.
Despite the update, congestion remains a daily issue on several major roads across Wyndham, with residents continuing to raise concerns about bottlenecks, travel times and whether infrastructure delivery is keeping pace with growth.
