In short:

Three Wyndham City councillors have called an unscheduled Council Meeting for 6pm on Monday 27 April 2026 to formally consider a motion of no confidence in Mayor Preet Singh. The move follows the Mayor’s refusal to resign amid weeks of community protests and a united call from all ten fellow councillors for him to step down.

No confidence vote looms

Three Wyndham City councillors have called an unscheduled Council Meeting in a bid to formally censure Mayor Preet Singh, after he declined to step down from the role.

Councillors Susan McIntyre, Robert Szatkowski and Peter Maynard have invoked Wyndham’s Governance Rules to convene the meeting for 6pm on Monday 27 April 2026, where Council will consider a motion of No Confidence in the Mayor.

In a statement announcing the move, the councillors said they had been left with no alternative.

“It is extremely disappointing that it has come to this but the Mayor has left us little choice,” they said.

The motion is symbolic in legal terms but is intended to place Council’s position on the formal public record.

“While a successful motion of No Confidence cannot compel the Mayor to stand down, it will reinforce Council’s position on the formal public record of Wyndham City Council,” the councillors said.

The unscheduled meeting follows weeks of political instability at Wyndham City Council. All ten of Cr Singh’s fellow councillors publicly called for his resignation earlier this month, after it was revealed he had provided a character reference in April 2024 for Kashyap Patel, who was later convicted of child sex offences. The reference predated Cr Singh’s election to council.

Cr Singh has previously acknowledged the reference showed “very poor judgment” and stepped aside from his mayoral duties on 2 April, with Deputy Mayor Jasmine Hill assuming the role in an acting capacity. He has not indicated if or when he will return.

Under the Local Government Act 2020, Council cannot remove a Mayor who has been elected for a one-year term, leaving a no confidence motion as the most forceful procedural option available to councillors.

Two community protests have been held at the Wyndham Civic Centre in Werribee calling on the Mayor to resign, with the second rally on Monday 6 April drawing more than 100 people. Crs Maynard, McIntyre and Szatkowski addressed that crowd.

“It is not about Peter, it’s not about Susan, it’s not about Robert — it is about respecting the wishes of the community and trying to restore confidence in the council and the position of mayor,” Cr Maynard said at the protest.

The government has also confirmed a municipal monitor will be appointed to Wyndham City Council.

In announcing the 27 April meeting, the councillors flagged the heightened public attention the matter has attracted and asked residents engaging online to be measured in their responses.

The unscheduled Council Meeting will be held at 6pm on Monday 27 April 2026.
