Golf Course Solution Shut Down
Wyndham councillors have backed a push to oppose a controversial plan to build nine new homes on parts of the Sanctuary Lakes golf course in Point Cook.
At the 12 May Planning Committee meeting, councillors voted in favour of planning officers recommending the proposal be refused, following widespread backlash from residents concerned about the loss of green space, trees and the estate’s resort-style character.
The proposal would carve up sections of the golf course known as Hole 4 and Hole 5, creating four housing lots near Point Cook Road and another five lots off Sanctuary Lakes North Boulevard.
The Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club has previously attempted similar subdivisions over recent years as it looks to maintain the long-term economic viability of the course, with earlier proposals also facing resistance and being refused by council.
Residents lodged more than 140 objections during the public consultation process, raising concerns about traffic, safety, tree removal, neighbourhood character and the gradual loss of open space within Sanctuary Lakes.
Council officers also raised concerns about the removal of mature vegetation and potential traffic issues linked to vehicle access from Sanctuary Lakes North Boulevard.
Because the applicant had already taken the matter to VCAT before council made a formal decision, councillors were unable to officially refuse the application themselves. Instead, they voted to support officers’ recommendation that the proposal should be rejected.
The matter will now continue through the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal later this year.
