Deputy Commissioner of Regional Operations Bob Hill has described the overall crime rate in Victoria as “totally unacceptable”, warning that rising crime means more victims across the community.
“The sad reality is that more crime equates to more victims involving members of the community, who in some cases, will be impacted for life,” he said.

Crime Hotspots and Offences in Wyndham
The latest data highlights Wyndham’s most crime-affected suburbs, with Werribee recording the highest number of incidents (4,489), followed by Tarneit (3,056), Hoppers Crossing (2,772), Point Cook (2,543), and Truganina (1,544).
The most common offences include:
• Theft from motor vehicles (3,266 incidents)
• Other theft offences (2,363 incidents)
• Criminal damage (1,429 incidents)
• Motor vehicle theft (1,040 incidents)
• Retail theft (1,031 incidents)
These offences largely occurred in retail premises (3,312 incidents), shopping complexes (337), and residential areas such as houses (112) and driveways (138).

Hill said police are well aware of the community’s frustration over young offenders breaking into homes, stealing cars, and endangering lives on the roads.
“Be assured that police are arresting the state’s worst young offenders again and again – youth gang members, child car thieves, and underage burglars were arrested 3,400 times last year as part of Operation Alliance and Operation Trinity.”
Despite a record number of arrests in 2023, crime continues to rise due to a range of complex issues affecting Victoria.
“Last year, our hardworking officers made the most arrests since electronic records commenced in 1993, with more than 73,500 arrests in total or the equivalent of 201 per day,” Hill said.
Calls for Tougher Laws
The high rate of unsolved cases (62%) adds to concerns about public safety in Wyndham. Hill has called for young offenders to be held accountable, stating that “as a society, we simply cannot tolerate this level of offending.”
Victoria Police have been working with the government on strengthening bail laws to curb youth crime.
“We welcome last week’s announcement and have every confidence that the changes will lead to a reduction in youth offending and crimes such as aggravated burglaries,” Hill said.

Rising Family Violence and Economic Pressures
While youth crime dominates headlines, family violence has hit record levels in Victoria, with police responding to an incident every five minutes.
“Highly difficult economic times are also having a significant impact on crime, with financial pressures a common cause for family violence, while more people are resorting to stealing from shops to feed and clothe themselves and their family,” Hill explained.
Technology Driving Car Thefts
Vehicle thefts in Wyndham have sharply increased due to offenders using electronic devices to bypass security systems.
“Victoria Police continues to engage vehicle manufacturers around this issue, while vehicle owners can protect themselves from falling victim by installing cheap and easy crime prevention measures,” Hill advised.
The Road Ahead
With crime rising at an alarming rate, Wyndham police are expected to face growing pressure to boost crime prevention efforts and ensure offenders are brought to justice. Authorities are urging residents to report suspicious activity and take basic security precautions to avoid becoming victims.
