A daytime power outage in Wyndham impacts over 44,000 homes, disrupting traffic and businesses. Power restored earlier than expected after a suspected transformer fault at Laverton substation.
A significant power outage swept across parts of Wyndham this morning, leaving approximately 44,000 homes without power. The affected areas included Point Cook, Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Williams Landing, and Laverton. The cause of the outage has been traced to the Laverton Zone Substation located at Marquands Road and Sayers Road, which experienced a complete system trip, disrupting electricity supply across the region.
Traffic in Point Cook was thrown into chaos as traffic lights were down along major roads up to Sneydes Road, leading to gridlock during peak hours. A crash was reported at the intersection of Boardwalk Boulevard and Dunnings Road, further compounding traffic woes. Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, but delays persisted for much of the morning.

Point Cook Town Centre was heavily impacted, with most businesses forced to cease operations. However, Coles supermarket was able to remain open, possibly running on backup generators, offering some relief to shoppers. Despite this, the underground car park was left in darkness, with customers relying on phone torches to navigate the area.

Powercor, the energy provider, initially advised residents via SMS that the outage was expected to be resolved by 1:00pm. However, power was restored earlier than anticipated at 11:21am.
The outage has been attributed to a potential transformer fault at the Laverton substation. Powercor is expected to conduct further investigations to determine the exact cause and implement measures to prevent future disruptions.
Local residents expressed relief at the early restoration of power but raised concerns about the impact on traffic and the lack of backup infrastructure for businesses.
