Bold Initiative Promises State-of-the-Art Healthcare for Wyndham
In a significant development for Melbourne’s flourishing outer west, Minister for Health Infrastructure Mary-Anne Thomas revealed the ambitious plans for the expansion of Werribee Mercy Hospital’s emergency department. The project, a key initiative by the Allan Labor Government, aims to provide a more robust and comprehensive healthcare infrastructure for the region.
The unveiled designs showcase a project set to double the capacity of the emergency department, ultimately accommodating an additional 25,000 Victorians annually. The expansion seeks to alleviate the strain on the existing emergency department staff by augmenting bed capacity and introducing dedicated spaces for patient treatment.
Notably, the improved facilities are designed not only to enhance patient care but also to prioritize the well-being of hardworking healthcare professionals. The modern, world-class workplace will ensure that nurses, doctors, and other staff members have an environment conducive to delivering top-notch emergency care.

Among the key features of the expansion are plans to more than double the spaces for patient treatment, increasing from 33 to 67. This includes the creation of four resuscitation bays, 16 short-stay beds, 36 emergency care cubicles, and a specialized behavioural assessment room.
With site works already underway, construction is slated to commence in mid-2024, and the entire expansion is anticipated to be completed by 2026. The comprehensive project is part of a substantial $236 million investment aimed at augmenting the emergency department capacities of both Werribee Mercy Hospital and Casey Hospital Berwick.

Minister Mary-Anne Thomas emphasized the government’s commitment to fulfilling promises by stating, “We’re delivering on our promise to double the capacity and deliver a state-of-the-art emergency department at the Werribee Mercy Hospital – so more locals can get the care they need, close to home.”
Member for Werribee Tim Pallas underscored the significance of the expanded emergency department, noting, “This bigger ED will ensure people in the West have ready access to world-class facilities when a loved one gets sick or when an emergency strikes.”
This project adds to the previous investment of over $120 million in the 2018 expansion of Werribee Mercy Hospital, which introduced new inpatient beds, critical care beds, operating theatres, and an additional 54 mental health beds.
