Defects Land Director In Hot Water
A building company and its director are facing criminal charges over alleged dangerous and non-compliant work at a Tarneit home.
The Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC) has filed charges against Baba Building Group Pty Ltd and director Dheeraj Sandala following an investigation into the property.
The BPC first inspected the Tarneit site in March 2025, finding missing smoke detectors, exposed electrical wiring and structural defects.
A Direction to Fix was issued, but the regulator alleges Baba failed to fully comply despite multiple opportunities and further inspections through to February 2026.
Baba Building Group and Sandala now face six charges, including allegedly failing to comply with a Direction to Fix, failing to provide information about non-compliant plumbing work and failing to carry out building work in accordance with building requirements.
Facing Half A Million In Fines
The BPC alleges much of the non-compliant work remained unresolved until recently.
If found guilty, Baba Building Group faces maximum fines of more than $500,000, while Sandala faces maximum fines exceeding $100,000.
The home remains incomplete, but inspections by the BPC and building surveyor have determined it is safe to live in.
The investigation also resulted in Directions to Fix being issued over Baba Building Group work at two properties in Officer and properties in Clayton South and Mount Waverley. The BPC says all were resolved under its supervision.
The regulator issued a consumer warning covering Baba Building Group and associated entities in 2025 amid its investigation.
The case is before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, with a further mention scheduled for 24 September.
