Locals chase down fleeing driver
A 32-year-old Tarneit man is expected to be charged after allegedly crashing a Mitsubishi Triton into a house in Tarneit while more than four times over the legal alcohol limit.
Highway Patrol officers responded to Rejoice Street just after 10pm on 9 June following reports that a Mitsubishi had collided with a light pole, reversed into a tree, and then struck the front of a house.
By the time police arrived, the vehicle had fled the scene. Two residents, alerted by the crash, followed the driver and convinced him to return.
No one inside the home was injured. One of the residents told Wyndham TV that their five-year-old child usually sleeps in the room that was hit but, fortunately, had been sleeping at the back of the house that night.
The Mitsubishi returned to the property a short time later. It is alleged the driver underwent a breath test and returned a reading of 0.205—more than four times the legal limit.
Neither the alleged driver nor his passengers were injured in the crash.
The man’s licence was immediately suspended, and he is expected to be charged on summons for drink driving offences.
