Two Tyre Recyclers Stung
EPA Victoria has fined two waste tyre companies more than $20,000 following a snap inspection at an Altona North recycling facility.
Autocycle International Pty Ltd and VR Tyre Recycling Pty Ltd were each fined $10,455 after EPA officers found they had failed to record the transport and delivery of 300 waste tyres through the state’s Waste Tracker system.
Waste tyres are classified as Reportable Priority Waste in Victoria due to the potential risks they pose to human health and the environment when improperly stored or disposed of.
Large tyre stockpiles can also create a significant fire risk, with tyre fires difficult to control once established.
Businesses that generate, transport, accept or store Reportable Priority Waste must record its movement through EPA Victoria’s Waste Tracker system. Records must be created before the waste is transported.
EPA Executive Director of Operations Rachel Gualano said officers are carrying out random and targeted inspections to check businesses are meeting their obligations.
“Accurate recording of waste movements is a critical requirement for protecting communities and the environment from hazardous waste.
“Each instance of a missing or an incomplete Waste Tracker record is a separate offence. We won’t hesitate to take enforcement action against businesses that breach their obligations under the Act,” Ms Gualano said.
EPA Victoria says enforcement of Waste Tracker requirements forms part of its statewide crackdown on illegal waste dumping.
