In short:
EPA Victoria is reminding homeowners that asbestos removal should be carried out by licensed professionals and that all asbestos waste must be taken to approved disposal facilities. With many Wyndham homes built before 1990, residents are encouraged to check disposal requirements before starting renovations.
EPA: Do Not DIY Asbestos Removal
Victorians are being urged to leave asbestos removal to licensed professionals and make sure any asbestos waste is legally disposed of, following the National Asbestos Awareness Campaign.
With most homes built before 1990 likely to contain some form of asbestos, the EPA says many homeowners across Wyndham will eventually face the issue, particularly when renovating older properties.
While asbestos materials are generally considered stable and low risk if left undisturbed, they can become dangerous when damaged during renovations or after events such as fires or floods.
EPA Victoria Executive Director of Operations Rachel Gualano said homeowners had an important responsibility to ensure asbestos was handled and disposed of correctly.
EPA Victoria has updated its list of licensed asbestos disposal sites and is encouraging residents to check approved facilities before any removal work begins.
“The safest and best option is to hire a licensed asbestos removal contractor,” Ms Gualano said.
“If you choose to remove asbestos from your own home, however, you must take proper steps to protect yourself, your family and the community.
“That includes making sure all asbestos waste is safely transported to a licensed facility. EPA Victoria publishes a list of licensed asbestos disposal sites, so always make that your first step. Asbestos doesn’t belong in our parks and reserves, and it doesn’t belong in your bin.”
The EPA says residents should also ask contractors for a waste tracker receipt showing the asbestos was delivered to a licensed landfill.
“Make sure the removal company can and will produce a waste tracker receipt that shows the asbestos has been taken to a landfill licensed to receive it,” Ms Gualano said.
“Some individuals and businesses will charge you for legal disposal, then dump the asbestos and pocket the profits. That’s a serious crime that puts people and our environment at risk, and is one of the top priorities for our Illegal Waste Dumping Taskforce.”
Residents can find more information about asbestos health risks through the Asbestos in Victoria website, the Better Health Channel and WorkSafe Victoria.
