Caravan Industry Data Reveals Growing Travel Trends and Economic Impact

The Caravan and Camping industry continues to be the top choice for Australian travelers, offering customer-focused experiences, unbeatable value, and memorable holiday offerings. According to the latest data released by the Caravan Industry Association of Australia, there has been a significant surge in travel numbers across the country, encouraging Wyndham residents to venture outside their beloved region and explore new destinations.

During the March quarter, travel numbers witnessed a robust increase, with individuals embarking on 4.5 million trips (up 24%) throughout our magnificent country. Moreover, there were 18 million nights (up 22%) spent indulging in the joys of caravanning and camping. This surge contributes to an annual rolling total of 15.5 million trips, 62.3 million nights, and a staggering $11.2 billion in visitor expenditure. These figures surpass the pre-COVID 2019 statistics of 14 million trips and 59 million nights.

Caravanning and camping emerged as the leading provider of holiday nights in the country during the March quarter, generating substantial support for regional and rural economies, with 90% of trips taking place in regional areas.

Stuart Lamont, CEO of the Caravan Industry Association of Australia, expressed his delight, stating, “Seeing growth in the industry is always great to see, but in the face of uncertain economic times, these numbers demonstrate the everlasting strength of our customer offering and our immense value for money proposition.”

He further added, “We’re continuing to see Australian’s love affair with their country grow, as they spend more and more time in our beautiful regional and rural towns. This growth is especially encouraging, knowing that 89% of these trips are being spent in areas that truly need the support.”

The Australians’ passion for road-tripping is evident in the soaring demand for RV products, with approximately 800,000 registered RVs, equating to 30.3 caravans and campervans per 1,000 people. This adventurous spirit not only fuels exploration but also injects funds directly into the hands of many regional small businesses.

“In a time when we haven’t witnessed the return of international visitors as expected, it has been the caravan industry, its parks, and holiday resorts across the country that have continued to contribute to the economy through sustained tourism dollars. On average, travelers spend $867 per trip in a caravan park, resulting in over $11.2 billion of visitor expenditure annually,” highlighted Stuart.

Despite economic challenges and a slight softening in consumer confidence, the caravan and camping industry remains the backbone of the domestic tourism sector, making a significant contribution to the Australian economy. It looks forward to further building upon the annual economic value of $27 billion.

Stuart concluded by stating, “It is clear to see that Australians are born travelers. With increasing costs associated with overseas travel and declining international tourist figures, our industry continues to be the preferred choice for those seeking a getaway from their everyday lives.”
