Solar Homes Program Powers Victoria's Shift to Affordable Renewable Energy
The Solar Homes program has significantly reduced energy bills for families in Victoria. According to recent reports, the program has helped over 350,000 households install solar panels, hot water systems, and solar batteries through rebates and interest-free loans.
Since its launch six years ago, the program has resulted in the installation of 5 million solar panels on rooftops, leading to an annual savings of $279 million for families. This has also contributed to a reduction of 6.5 gigawatt hours of power, equivalent to powering every fridge in the state for almost two years.
The program has seen overwhelming support from households, with solar now installed on 30% of Victorian homes. In Melbourne’s western suburbs, 44% of homes in areas such as Tarneit, Truganina, Werribee, and Hoppers Crossing have installed solar panels.
Regional areas have also embraced the program, with Mildura and Shepparton having the highest solar uptake, closely followed by Wodonga, Wangaratta, and Wallan.
Aside from its impact on energy bills, the Solar Homes program has also created 5,500 jobs and provided free training for plumbers and electricians to upskill, benefiting both households and the economy.
As the program continues to grow and evolve, it remains a crucial part of Victoria’s efforts to transition to a more sustainable and affordable energy future.
