Police link fatal arson to illicit tobacco war, release new CCTV.
Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad have released additional CCTV footage and are seeking further information regarding a fatal house fire that took place in Truganina in January. Investigators now believe that this arson attack is likely connected to an illicit tobacco dispute, and Taskforce Lunar is closely involved in the investigation.

Authorities suggest that the attack was targeted, but misdirected to the wrong address. The police have yet to establish any motive for targeting the woman and her family who resided in the house and are believed to be innocent victims in this incident.
The incident occurred shortly after 2am on Thursday, 16 January, when CCTV footage captured two individuals exiting a dark-coloured vehicle, similar to a BMW X3, parked outside the address. A significant explosion followed their exit, after which the pair fled the scene. A 27-year-old woman from Hoppers Crossing, who was inside the property at the time, called emergency services to report the fire.
Emergency services initially responded to reports of a fire at a residential property on Dover Street around 2.30am on the same day. Katie Tangey was housesitting the property, which belongs to a family member. Tragically, Tangey and the family’s golden retriever died in the fire, and the three-story townhouse was completely destroyed.
A dark-coloured vehicle, similar to the one seen at the scene of the crime, was captured on CCTV travelling north on Forsyth Road in Truganina at approximately 2.12am. A ring camera at the Dover Street house also recorded the moment the house was engulfed in flames, and two men, one carrying what appears to be a jerry can, fleeing the scene.
Over the past four weeks, a significant investigation has taken place to determine the motivation for the attack and the individuals responsible. This investigation has led Taskforce Lunar to uncover information linking the incident to the illicit tobacco dispute.
Detective Inspector Chris Murray of the Arson & Explosives Squad appealed to the public, stating, “Katie Tangey, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a beloved member of her community, has needlessly lost her life in this senseless and despicable incident, which we are investigating as a deliberate act. To those responsible: we are committing every resource we have to finding you and holding you accountable for this homicide.”
Anyone with information or who recognises the individuals or the vehicle involved is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
