First Nations Top Council Education Priority
Wyndham City Council will endorse an update to its Learning Community Strategy 2024–2029 at its 24 February 2026 meeting, formally retaining First Nations learning as the leading pillar of the city’s education agenda.
The strategy sets out four focus areas, with “First Nations 1st” placed at the top. It embeds Indigenous knowledge, culture and language across council-supported learning programs delivered through libraries, community centres and community partners.
According to the 2021 Census, approximately 0.9 per cent of Wyndham residents identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
Despite representing less than one per cent of the municipality’s population, First Nations learning is positioned as a foundational priority across all age groups.
Council has already implemented a Reconciliation Action Plan aimed at strengthening recognition and relationships.
The updated Learning Community Strategy expands that direction by integrating Indigenous perspectives more broadly throughout its lifelong learning framework.
Wyndham is one of Victoria’s fastest-growing municipalities and continues to face pressure on infrastructure, skills development and essential services.
Some residents argue council-funded learning initiatives should concentrate more heavily on literacy, digital capability, foundation skills and employability programs that directly impact a larger share of the population.
Supporters say cultural recognition is not determined by demographic size and argue embedding Indigenous perspectives reflects institutional responsibility and long-term social cohesion.
The endorsement on 24 February 2026 confirms the direction. First Nations learning remains the strategy’s first pillar as Wyndham balances cultural priorities against growing service demands.
