Melbourne’s western councils have united to call for more visible police and improved access to local police stations, arguing frontline resources have not kept pace with the region’s rapid population growth.
The mayors of Wyndham, Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Brimbank and Melton have jointly urged the Victorian Government to increase neighbourhood policing across Melbourne’s west, improve access to local police stations and ensure police numbers keep pace with growing communities.
The joint call comes following recent incidents across Melbourne’s west, including the alleged assault of a trader in Sunshine, which the councils say has highlighted concerns about community safety.
The councils are also seeking greater investment in mental health, homelessness, alcohol and other drug services to better support police and help prevent issues from escalating.
While councils say they continue to invest in CCTV, cleaner public spaces, trader support and community partnerships, they argue these measures cannot replace a strong frontline police presence.
Wyndham Mayor Mia Shaw said the city’s rapid growth must be matched by essential services.
“Our residents deserve police resources that match our growth. This is about keeping families safe and making sure Wyndham receives its fair share,” Cr Shaw said.
The five councils say Melbourne’s west deserves police resources that reflect the size and growth of its communities, with a stronger local police presence and accessible police stations.
