Flood Chaos Sparks Petition: Wyndham Council to Decide Future of Doherty’s Road

Dohertys Road Dips

Petitioners call for urgent action on flood-prone Doherty’s Road, with Council set to respond with its current duplication plan.

Wyndham Council will vote tonight 26th of November on its response to a community petition regarding the frequent flooding and safety issues at the Doherty’s Road dip in Tarneit. The petition, submitted on 11 July 2024, was signed by 20 residents (17 valid signatures) and calls for the immediate relaying and development of the dip, citing severe deficiencies in the current infrastructure.

Council officers have recommended that the petitioners be thanked for raising their concerns and be informed of the Council’s existing plan to duplicate Doherty’s Road between Sapling Boulevard and Tarneit Road.

The duplication project, currently in the concept design stage, includes the construction of a bridge over Dry Creek to prevent flooding and closures during heavy rain. Additional upgrades will include traffic signals at the Tarneit Road intersection, increased road capacity, and shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists. The project is set to begin construction in 2027 and be completed by early to mid-2028, subject to budget approvals.

In the interim, Council is exploring maintenance works to reduce the frequency and severity of flooding until the duplication and bridge construction are completed. These temporary measures aim to minimise disruption to residents and commuters.

If approved, tonight’s vote will finalise Council’s formal response to the petitioners, outlining its current plans while reaffirming its commitment to addressing the community’s concerns. Updates on the project will be shared through Wyndham’s Connecting Wyndham website and social media channels.
