In short:
Dohertys Road in Tarneit continues to face regular flood closures, with a new flip-out warning sign now installed to improve safety during heavy rain events.
A new flip-out flood warning sign has been installed on Dohertys Road in Tarneit, as the road continues to face regular closures during heavy rainfall.
Wyndham City Mayor Josh Gilligan posted that during flood events, the sign will clearly show the road is closed.
“It’s a simple but important step to reduce confusion and improve safety,” he said.
The Mayor described the sign as an interim safety measure while planning continues for the duplication of Dohertys Road between Tarneit Road and Sapling Boulevard, with construction expected to begin in the second half of 2027.
“Your safety is our priority. Stay safe, and never drive through floodwater,” he said.

Dohertys Road has been impacted by repeated flooding incidents over the years. After periods of heavy rain, sections of the road regularly become submerged, forcing closures and diverting traffic onto surrounding routes.
Despite road closure signs and visible water across the roadway during past events, some motorists have still attempted to drive through floodwater, with multiple vehicles becoming stuck.
The addition of a flip-out sign provides another visual warning during these events. However, given the road’s history of recurring closures and previous instances where drivers have ignored warnings, some residents question how effective signage alone will be without broader infrastructure upgrades.

Local resident Usman Butt criticised the announcement.
“An out of touch, irrelevant and irresponsible statement and quoting about priorities? By Mayor of Wyndham City regarding Residents Safety,” he said.
“If Safety is your priority then you MUST do an active advocacy, awareness and campaign for changes, which you are not along with all fellow councillors. This road is a combination of unsafe acts and conditions.”
He also questioned the duplication timeline.
“2027???? And you are saying, it’s a priority? NO ITS NOT.”
The duplication of Dohertys Road has long been raised as a key infrastructure priority in Melbourne’s rapidly growing west, particularly as traffic volumes increase between Tarneit and Truganina.
For now, the new flip-out sign will serve as an added warning during flood events, while residents continue to call for longer-term solutions to address the road’s ongoing flooding issues.
