A Step Towards a More Sustainable Future
In a recent Council meeting, Mastec Australia Pty Ltd was granted the contract to provide Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bins and caddies to all Wyndham households currently without one. This move aims to extend the universal FOGO service to all households by early 2026.
The initiative is part of a larger program initiated by the Victorian Government in 2020. The program’s goal is to transform the recycling sector, reduce waste, generate thousands of jobs, and set Victoria on a path to a more sustainable future.
According to the current draft standards, the Victorian Government mandates that all Councils must provide green-lid FOGO bins to all households receiving a Council waste service by the end of June 2027. Wyndham City is set to commence the delivery of these bins to households without them in February and March 2026.
Wyndham City Mayor, Councillor Mia Shaw, highlighted that nearly half of Wyndham’s household waste, or 30,000 tonnes annually, is organic material. The introduction of FOGO bins to each household could divert this waste from landfill.
“The state government requires all households to have a green lid bin by June 2027. To meet our obligations under this legislation, we will start early next year,” said Councillor Shaw.
Councillor Shaw further explained that food and garden waste make up 46% of household waste sent to landfill. This waste produces methane, a greenhouse gas 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide. However, once the FOGO bin project is fully implemented, this waste will be redirected from landfill to a commercial composting facility. Here, it will be converted into nutrient-rich compost, beneficial for local farms and promoting a more sustainable future.
Councillor Shaw also urged residents already with a green lid bin to dispose of all their food waste in it, assisting the community in reducing landfill waste.
All Wyndham residents will be notified about the project’s roll-out via mail and social media updates.
