Fares Scrapped For April

The Allan Labor Government will make public transport free across Victoria from 31 March to 30 April 2026, as it responds to rising fuel prices.

Premier Jacinta Allan announced the measure on 29 March 2026, linking it to global pressures on oil supply.

“War in the Middle East is directly resulting in higher prices at the pump, putting Victorian households under pressure. As Premier, I’m determined to do everything within my control to help Victorians deal with the cost of living and these rising fuel prices.”

“It’ll take pressure off the pump and take more cars off the road.”

Fares will be removed across the entire public transport network, including metropolitan trains, trams and buses, as well as regional V/Line train and coach services.

The change will apply for one month, allowing passengers to travel without paying fares during that period.

The announcement comes as fuel prices in Wyndham sit around $2.60 per litre for petrol and about $3.20 for diesel.

The measure is expected to reduce travel costs for people who regularly use public transport. In Wyndham, that includes commuters along established train lines and bus routes connecting to major activity centres.

However, the extent of the benefit is likely to vary across the municipality. In parts of Wyndham where public transport services are limited, indirect or less frequent, many residents continue to rely on private vehicles for daily travel.

Suburbs such as Werribee South, Mambourin, Wyndham Vale and Manor Lakes have fewer direct public transport options compared to inner areas, which may affect how widely the free travel period is used.

The free fare window will run through April 2026, with its overall impact on travel patterns expected to become clearer over that period.
