Free Travel Extended Another Month

In short:

Free public transport across Victoria is extended until 31 May, with fares halved to $5.70 from 1 June as part of a response to the fuel crisis. In Wyndham, limited services in suburbs like Wyndham Vale and Manor Lakes may reduce how much residents benefit.

Reduced Fares Until End of Year

The Allan Labor Government will extend free public transport across Victoria until 31 May, before introducing half-price fares for the remainder of the year.

From 1 June, full fares will be capped at $5.70, down from $11.40.

Free travel was first introduced on 31 March in response to the global fuel price crisis linked to conflict in the Middle East.

The extension and fare reduction form part of a broader push to reduce car use, ease pressure on fuel supplies and lower commuting costs.

The changes are expected to benefit commuters across Melbourne’s west, including Wyndham, where many residents rely on long car journeys for work.

However, the extent of the benefit is likely to vary across the municipality. In parts of Wyndham where public transport services are limited, indirect or less frequent, many residents continue to rely on private vehicles for daily travel.

Suburbs such as Werribee South, Mambourin, Wyndham Vale and Manor Lakes have fewer direct public transport options compared to inner areas, which may affect how widely the free travel period is used.

The announcement has drawn mixed reaction. Supporters say the move will ease cost-of-living pressures and encourage greater use of public transport.

Others have raised concerns about how the policy will be funded and whether costs could be passed on elsewhere.

It comes days after a major fire at the Corio oil refinery, one of Australia’s last, further tightening supply concerns and fuelling speculation about potential fuel rationing.
