Overhead footage of the incident shows what appears to be white sheeting, believed to be plasterboard, scattered across the Princes Freeway below the ramp, along with freeway railings.

Victoria’s transport department confirmed all city-bound lanes of the Princes Freeway onto the West Gate Freeway and Geelong Road are closed. The ramp from the M80 Ring Road Altona-bound onto the Princes Freeway is also closed.

Police, firefighters and members of the public were all on scene assisting emergency services as crews worked to clear the debris and reopen the freeway.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area and allow significant extra travel time, with delays expected to continue throughout the morning.
