Fuel margins drive local price rise

Fuel prices rise for Wyndham motorists this quarter, with new ACCC data confirming that petrol and diesel costs increase across Melbourne and Australia’s largest cities.

According to the Report on the Australian Petroleum Market – September Quarter 2025, Melbourne’s average petrol price lifts to 182.9 cents per litre, up 2.8 cents since the previous quarter. The combined average across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth reaches 178.8 cents per litre.

The ACCC attributes the rise mainly to higher international refined petrol prices and increased wholesale costs and margins. A stronger Australian dollar offsets some of the impact, but not enough to prevent higher pump prices felt locally across suburbs such as Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Point Cook.

Melbourne records three petrol price cycles during the quarter, each lasting around five to six weeks, leading to noticeable price peaks before declines. Wyndham motorists, who rely heavily on car travel, continue to be affected by timing within these cycles.

Gross retail margins in Melbourne also remain high at 20.1 cents per litre, one of the highest in the country. Brisbane records the highest retail margins nationally, while Adelaide remains the lowest.

The report also highlights the launch of the Victorian Government’s Servo Saver fuel-price comparison tool on the Service Victoria app, giving Wyndham drivers improved real-time access to local pricing.

Diesel prices rise as well, reaching an average of 181.8 cents per litre across the largest cities, driven by increases in the global benchmark for refined diesel. Diesel does not follow price cycles but remains sensitive to international market pressures.

The ACCC continues to monitor national pricing trends, noting that international supply conditions and local competition both play roles in what motorists in Wyndham ultimately pay at the bowser.
