Library Options to be Discussed

The future of the Williams Landing Library Lounge is set to be reviewed after Wyndham councillors unanimously backed a motion calling for a report into options beyond 2027.

The current library lounge operates from a leased site, with the lease due to expire in 2027.

Council does not own the land, meaning a decision will eventually need to be made about where and how library services will continue in the suburb.

Councillors voted in favour of a motion from Cr Larry Zhao at the 26 May council meeting, directing the CEO to prepare a report exploring potential future locations and long-term operating arrangements for library services in Williams Landing once the lease expires.

The report is expected to be presented at a councillor briefing in July, with any final decision to return to a future council meeting for debate and a formal vote.

Cr Zhao noted that the area was growing and may need a larger facility, while Cr Josh Gilligan expressed concerns about taking on operational responsibility rather than leaving it officers.

The Williams Landing Library Lounge currently serves as a library and community space for local residents, including families, students and seniors.

The motion notes that it has become one of the suburb’s key shared community spaces as Williams Landing continues to grow.

No preferred option has been identified at this stage, with the review intended to examine available alternatives before the current lease comes to an end.
