The incident, which is believed to have occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, was discovered shortly after 7am when shop owner Ahmed arrived to prepare for the day’s trading. Upon arrival, he found shattered glass and significant damage to the shopfront, along with some of the equipment inside the store.

Emergency services were quickly called, and police are now investigating the crash. Authorities confirmed that the vehicle involved had fled the scene, and the driver has yet to be identified.

CCTV cameras in a neighbouring building were not operational at the time of the incident, which initially hampered investigations. However, WyndhamTV has been advised that these cameras are now back up and running, potentially aiding future surveillance efforts in the area. Police are still urging the public to provide any information that could help with their investigation.

Ahmed, the shop owner, reassured customers that the business is insured, but acknowledged that the damage would take time to repair. “We’ve been through a lot today, but thankfully, we are covered by insurance. I want to thank everyone for their support during this difficult time,” Ahmed said. He also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of well-wishes from customers, adding, “The calls and messages have been overwhelming, and we appreciate everyone’s kindness.”

Racecourse Fish and Chips, a well-loved fixture in Werribee for many years, is temporarily closed while repairs are carried out on the damaged shopfront.

Police continue to investigate and are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information about the vehicle involved to contact Crime Stoppers.
