A 24-year-old Truganina man has been charged after Victoria Police Highway Patrol officers discovered a tomahawk, knuckle dusters and an imitation firearm inside his car during a stop in Melbourne’s west on Sunday 14 June.
Officers noticed the man make an abrupt turn back into a car park after spotting a marked Highway Patrol vehicle. He then attempted to walk away from the car, telling police he had not seen them.
The man produced a Queensland driver’s licence, but checks showed he held a Victorian P2 licence, which was suspended.
As he stepped out of the vehicle, police noticed what appeared to be a weapon in the door pocket, prompting a full search of the car. The search located knuckle dusters, an imitation firearm and a tomahawk.
The man told police he was unaware his licence had been suspended and said the imitation firearm, a BB gun, was legal to own in Queensland.
The vehicle was impounded and the man will be charged on summons. His solicitor was present at the scene during the search.
