In short: Â
Wyndham councillors have approved a new planning policy aimed at protecting industrial land in Truganina from being gradually converted into retail and other non-industrial uses. The move is intended to preserve one of Melbourne’s key freight and logistics precincts and safeguard future employment opportunities in the area.
Council Moves to Protect Precinct
Wyndham councillors have voted to tighten protections on industrial land in Truganina, backing a new policy designed to limit the spread of non-industrial businesses within a key employment precinct.
The policy, endorsed at the 26 May council meeting, will guide future planning decisions in Industrial Park B, part of the Truganina Employment Precinct near Boundary Road and Palmers Road.
The change follows concerns that industrial land in the area is gradually being converted into uses such as retail stores, food premises and service businesses. Council officers found that only around 10 per cent of Industrial Park B remains undeveloped, with a growing number of sites shifting away from industrial purposes.
Under the new policy, planning applications that support manufacturing, logistics, warehousing and other industrial activities will be favoured. Proposals that reduce the amount of land available for industry or introduce uses that could conflict with nearby industrial operations are likely to face greater scrutiny.
Industrial Park B forms part of the wider Laverton North–Truganina industrial precinct, one of Melbourne’s largest freight, logistics and manufacturing hubs.
Council officers argued that while individual commercial developments may appear reasonable on their own, the cumulative effect over time could permanently reduce industrial land availability and limit future employment opportunities.
The broader Truganina Employment Precinct was originally planned to support between 10,000 and 15,000 jobs.
