Is Solar Still Worth It?

Jacinta Solar

In short:

Many in Wyndham are rethinking solar as rising installation and battery costs reduce the benefits. The debate continues over whether solar is still a smart investment.

Wyndham Families Split on Solar

Wyndham residents are weighing up whether solar is still worth it, as the State Government claims it has cut more than $1 billion from the upfront cost of installing solar panels, heat pumps and home batteries.

Under Victoria’s Solar Homes program, households can access a $1,400 rebate and an interest-free loan for rooftop solar, or up to $2,800 for apartments. Rebates of up to $1,400 also apply for heat-pump hot water systems — said to save families as much as $1,000 a year when combined with rooftop panels.

But across Wyndham’s fast-growing suburbs — including Tarneit, Truganina, and Werribee — many homeowners say those rebates don’t go far enough. Rising installation prices, lengthy payback periods, and the high cost of battery replacements have left residents questioning if the long-term return is still there.

While solar panels can last more than two decades, batteries typically need replacing within ten years — a bill that can exceed $8,000. Meanwhile, feed-in tariffs have continued to drop, meaning residents earn far less for sending excess energy back into the grid.

Some locals argue that without higher rebates or reforms, solar risks becoming a luxury rather than a genuine cost-of-living solution. Others say the technology remains a long-term investment in lower bills and cleaner energy for Wyndham’s future.

Since 2018, the Solar Homes program has installed more than 324,000 solar systems across Victoria, providing $750 million in rebates and $365 million in interest-free loans. Wyndham’s growth corridors have been among the most active regions for take-up, though some residents are now holding off as installation and maintenance costs rise.

Energy and Resources Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the program is about helping households cut costs while embracing renewables.
“Our focus is on delivering cheaper power bills for Victorian families – helping to cut the cost of living and put more money back in their pockets,” she said.
“More Victorians are slashing their energy bills with free power from the sun and maximising the use of this solar during the day to power their home offices.”

The debate continues in Wyndham: is solar still a smart investment — or has the shine started to fade?
