Construction starts early 2025 for the Ison Road Extension, providing a major new road link for Wyndham West
Construction of the Ison Road Extension is set to begin in early 2025, marking a significant step forward for Wyndham West’s rapidly growing community by providing a new link to the Princes Freeway. The extension will connect with the Ison Road Overpass, which is currently under construction, and will be open to drivers by the end of 2026.
“This is a critical road link that will benefit tens of thousands of residents in Australia’s fastest-growing region,” said Wyndham City Council Chief Executive Officer Stephen Wall. “We thank the Victorian Government for their investment in the Ison Road connection and look forward to continuing to partner to deliver infrastructure to build a city our residents are proud to call home.”
The Ison Road Extension project will see the construction of a 1.3-kilometre, four-lane road linking the overpass to the Geelong Road freeway interchange at Werribee. Once completed, the new link will not only enhance connectivity but also improve safety and reduce congestion, particularly in central Werribee. By 2036, it is expected to support over 29,000 daily journeys, addressing the growing transport needs of Wyndham West’s expanding population.

Major Road Projects Victoria Program Director Tim Price expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming developments, stating, “We look forward to starting construction of the Ison Road Extension to connect with the Ison Road Overpass.”
The project also includes walking and cycling paths extending to Geelong Road, encouraging active transport options within the local community. Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) has collaborated with Wyndham City Council on the extension’s pre-construction phase and will manage the delivery on behalf of the council.
The council has allocated $20 million toward the project, supplementing a $60 million contribution from the Victorian Government’s Growth Area Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) fund. Meanwhile, work continues on the overpass, which spans the Melbourne-Geelong railway line, with bridge beams recently installed as part of the latest construction milestone.
In addition to enhancing local transport links, the new infrastructure will enable the closure of the level crossing at Galvin Road in Werribee, located only 600 metres away. The closure, to be delivered by the Level Crossing Removal Project, is anticipated to alleviate a known traffic bottleneck, further improving safety and travel times for Wyndham’s residents.
