The Ison Road Project in Wyndham will open ahead of schedule in September 2026, easing congestion and improving links between Werribee and Wyndham Vale.
Major Project Nears Completion
A major road project in Wyndham is now expected to open ahead of schedule, with the new Ison Road overpass and road extension set to open in September 2026.
The project, which is being jointly funded by the Australian Government, Victorian Government and Wyndham City Council, will create a new connection across the Melbourne–Geelong rail corridor between Werribee and Wyndham Vale.
The centrepiece of the project is a new overpass across the rail line, linking Ison Road to a new 1.3-kilometre four-lane road connecting through to Geelong Road and the Princes Freeway interchange at Werribee.

Originally expected to open later in 2026, the road will now open around three months ahead of schedule.
The new connection is expected to ease congestion on surrounding roads, improve traffic flow and provide another major east-west link through Wyndham’s rapidly growing suburbs.
More than 29,000 daily journeys are forecast to use the road by 2036 as population growth continues across Melbourne’s west.
New walking and cycling paths are also being included as part of the project, with shared user paths running along the overpass and underneath the bridge, alongside additional path connections along the Geelong Road extension.

Although motorists are expected to begin using the road in September, crews will remain on site for several more months to complete finishing works including landscaping, lighting installation and final asphalting through to the end of 2026.
The project is also expected to support the future removal of the nearby Galvin Road level crossing, which currently carries more than 10,000 vehicles each day.
Wyndham has faced increasing pressure on its road network in recent years as population growth continues to outpace major transport upgrades, particularly around Werribee, Wyndham Vale and Manor Lakes.
The new link is expected to improve access between residential growth areas, the Princes Freeway and nearby employment precincts, while also reducing pressure on surrounding local roads.
