It’s Open! Altona’s New $11.9 Million Pier Unveiled

Wyndham Residents are Invited to view the stunning new upgrade.

After an impressive eight-month construction period, Altona proudly announces the official opening of its brand-new pier, just in time for holiday festivities by the waterfront. The community is invited to explore the stunning result of an $11.9 million investment from the Victorian Government, providing a picturesque and functional addition to Altona’s landscape and just a short drive from Wyndham.

Constructed with careful consideration for community input, the pier boasts beautiful timber decking, a direct response to the desires expressed during the initial stages of the project through extensive community consultation. The addition of handrails and lighting enhances safety for visitors, making the pier an inviting destination day and night. Additionally, the inclusion of a low landing’s accessible ramp ensures that all members of the community can enjoy the bay breezes this summer.

As the new pier emerged in the bay over the past months, residents had the opportunity to witness a free masterclass in maritime engineering. The first piles were installed during the winter, unveiling the pier’s footprint. Subsequent visible progress resulted in a structurally impressive and aesthetically pleasing final product.

The realignment of the pier provides improved visibility from Pier Street, strengthening its connection to Altona Village. The removal of the old pier marks a transformative moment, with elements set to be repurposed as part of the Council’s foreshore redevelopment upgrades, contributing to public art and furniture installations. Final touches are expected in the coming year.

Contractors, working tirelessly to ensure the pier is ready for summer enjoyment, have achieved a significant milestone, with only minor touches remaining for completion in the new year. These include the reinstatement of the sea wall near the pier entry and the installation of final seating elements, both set to be finalized early in 2024 with minimal disruption to pier visitors.
